Pet Allergies FAQs

At Hooves and Paws Pet Hospital in Aubrey, TX, we have treated pet allergies for many years. Just like humans, pets can be allergic to many things such as food, ticks, and flea bites. To understand what can cause pet allergies and how a veterinarian can provide help and recommend treatment to keep a pet allergy-free, consider the following questions pet owners often ask.

Pet Allergies FAQs

How to Know if a Pet has Allergies?

There are quite a few signs that indicate a pet has allergies. Some of the signs to look for include excessive scratching and biting in one area, excessive shedding, inflamed skin, nasal congestion, sneezing, excessive licking of the paws, red and inflamed skin, and puffy eyes. Also check your dog’s eyelids, lips, face, and earflaps for swelling.

What Does a Veterinarian Do About Pet Allergies?

Since you will not know what it is that is causing your pet discomfort, it is recommended that you schedule a visit to a pet hospital. This is the first step in determining what your pet is allergic to. Our veterinarian will check your pet and ask you about the type of food and treats the dog eats, what type of pet shampoo is used, which flea and tick preventative products are used, and any other information that will help determine the source or cause of the allergies.

Once our vet knows where the problem is originating from, an ongoing treatment plan will be implemented. This could include a change in the type of food, such as canned to dry or vice versa. The food brand may change from over-the-counter products to prescription food. Hypo-allergic bathing products may be necessary, as well as medication.

Do Allergies Ever Go Away?

Depending on the type of allergy your pet is experiencing, it can mean ongoing issues, but with treatment, allergies can be managed. A few things to consider is keeping your pet indoors, especially during the high-pollen season. It's a priority to keep pets protected from biting parasites, and to provide vet-recommended medication.
